Texas has now approved a new amendment to its constitution which bars the state from curtailing religious services.

Why it Matters: Texas has become a flashpoint in recent months over its controversial ‘Heartbeat bill’ which effectively bans abortion in the state after 6 weeks and allows private citizens to enforce the bill via lawsuits.

The new amendment, which was referred to as ‘Proposition 3’ on ballots, was approved by approximately 62 percent of voters on Tuesday. It will completely prevent any limitations on religious services by the state in the future, even in the name of public health.

The issue of freedom of religious worship came to a head during the height of the coronavirus pandemic, during which many states and municipalities imposed stay at home orders and attendance limits on houses of worship in order to slow the spread of the virus.
