The White House is worried that Iran is plotting to assassinate former Trump administration officials including the former president.
Context: A senior US official has revealed that the recent sanctions placed on President Trump, Mike Pompeo, and a multitude of other Trump administration officials are an assassination threat.
National Security adviser Jake Sullivan made clear, “Make no mistake: the United States of America will protect and defend its citizens… This includes those serving the United States now and those who formerly served.”
The basis of the threat comes in retaliation to the killing of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Gen. Qassem Soleimani by a drone strike ordered by President Trump
Why this is important: The threat was made by IRGC Quds Force Commander Sardar Esmail Qaani. The threat is open and real with the commander stating, “Wherever it is needed, we will provide for the basis of revenge against the Americans from within their houses and by people by their side without us being present.”
The Biden administration is standing tall noting that while the administrations have disagreements Americans are united in their resolve against threats and provocations.
