According to a new poll released by Gallup, American’s support for Gun Control has plummeted to a rate not seen since 2014.
The Details: According to the poll, only 52 percent of American adults want to see stricter gun control, a number which has decreased significantly since it clocked in at 62 percent in 2018.
In addition, only 19 percent of Americans now want to see a ban on the possession of handguns, the lowest rate ever recorded.
According to Gallup a stunning 88 percent of gun owners now claim that the reason that they own a gun is to protect themselves from crime a significant increase.
What it Means: The results come in the wake of a year, 2020, which saw homicides in the US skyrocket by 30 percent. Crime has continued to surge since then, and although less dramatic than 2020 the current rate is still well above that registered in pre-pandemic years.
The results also may bode ill for Democrats attempting to run on a gun control platform in the 2022 midterms.
