Nancy Pelosi is championing the free market as she pushes back on efforts to stop members of Congress from owning individual stocks.

Context: Pelosi, one of the wealthiest members of Congress, and one of the best investors is opposed to the idea.

Despite stock purchases by some senators at the beginning of the pandemic triggering investigations, Pelosi remains opposed.

Pelosi recently announced her intention to run for another term in Congress.

Why this is important: A business insider investigation revealed that 49 members of Congress and 182 senior staffers violated an act called the STOCK Act.

The act requires public disclosure of individual stock purchases within 45 days of purchase. The requirement is for them and family members.

The act is meant to keep lawmakers and staffers from trading on insider information acquired on Capitol Hill.

Despite the potential conflict of interest issues, Pelosi remains opposed.
