According to a new report by The Washington Post, longtime Democrat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is expected to finally step down after the 2022 midterm elections. Ending a storied political career.
The Details: The 81 year-old Pelosi will likely step down after controlling the Democratic speakership for decades in order to make way for younger leadership within the party. The individuals who would normally be her natural successors however, Rep. Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) and Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-SC) are also in their 80’s, making direct successor more tricky for them then would normally be the case.
The post noted New York Democrat Rep. Hakeem Jeffries as one of Pelosi’s other potential successors along with California Democrat Adam Schiff.
The contest to become Pelosi’s successor may also become quite contentious, as rival factions within the party itself battle to control its future direction and priorities.
