U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas answered questions at a White House briefing on Thursday afternoon, hours before Title 42 is set to be lifted. Images of migrants flooding across the Rio Grande and other border sites could be seen as the secretary made his remarks. But somehow, Mayorkas managed to say that “our borders are not open.” There is currently 700,000 migrants waiting at the southern border to enter and be processed by Biden’s DHS. Over 400,000 illegal border crossings are expected to occur every month.

“We expected to see large numbers of encounters initially. We are already seeing high numbers of encounters in certain sectors,” Mayorkas admitted.

“This places an incredible strain on our personnel, our facilities and our communities with whom we partner closely. We prepared for this moment for almost two years and our plan will deliver results. It will take time for those results to be fully realized, and it is essential that we all take this into account.”

Watch as migrants cross the border during Sec. Mayorkas’ press conference:

Mayorkas also talked about the dangers of migrants working with smugglers, saying, “Smugglers have been long, hard at work, spreading false information that the border will be open. They are lying to people who are thinking of making their journey to our southern border. Know this: Smugglers care only about profits, not people. Do not risk your life and your life savings only to be removed from the United States.”

Things will only get worse at midnight tonight when Title 42 is officially lifted and then a full blown crisis will ensue.
