Instead of an opponent, former President Donald Trump may be considering Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as a running mate. Neither man has made any official declaration of their intent in the next presidential election, though both have garnered intense interest from voters.

Speaking to Newsmax’s Rob Finnerty, Trump said he has a good relationship with DeSantis and suggested he is responsible for the governor’s current political success.

“Well, I get along with him,” Trump said. “I was very responsible for his success, because I endorsed him and he went up like a rocket ship.”

Trump endorsed DeSantis’ 2018 run for governor when he was still considered a longshot challenger. After Trump’s endorsement, DeSantis surged in popularity and went on to win the gubernatorial race, according to The Hill.

Since then, DeSantis has become a conservative champion in his own right. He gained even more popularity for his handling of COVID-19 and his ability to stand up to the mainstream media and national Democrat leadership.

Supposedly there is tension behind closed doors as Trump allegedly takes issue with DeSantis’ growing political ambition, but the two were recently seen having a friendly conversation during an April wedding at Mar-a-Lago.

It’s not the first time Trump has responded positively to the suggestion of a united Trump-DeSantis effort. He previously told Fox Business host Mario Bartiromo “a lot of people love that ticket”.
