The National Rifle Association’s annual meeting kicks off today in Houston just days after the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

Organizers are preparing for protests and potentially violent demonstrations. Former President Donald Trump and Senator Ted Cruz are still slated to speak during the three-day event.

According to Axios, Abbott will instead hold a press conference on “state resources available for those impacted by the Robb Elementary School shooting”. He will send “pre-recorded video remarks” to the NRA Event, his spokesman Mark Miner told the Houston Chronicle.

Beto O’Rourke, who is running against Abbott this fall, is reportedly planning to attend a protest outside the convention along with several anti-gun organizations.

A few other speakers have pulled out of the convention since the shooting, including country singers Larry Gatlin and Larry Stewart and Don McClean.
