It would mark the first time in history a hypersonic missile is used in combat.

Russia claimed Saturday morning it used its hypersonic Kinzhal (Dagger) missiles to destroy a large storage facility in western Ukraine.

Defense ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov told the press that the underground facility stored Ukrainian missiles and aircraft ammunition. He also claimed the country’s forces destroyed military radio systems using its coastal missile system. Western media has not independently confirmed those statements, though US officials say they were able to track the launches in real time.

The Kinzhal is a nuclear-capable missile that travels 10 times the speed of sound and has a range of about 1,250 miles, approximately the distance between Washington DC and Dallas, Texas. It was unveiled with an array of other weapons in 2018, but has not been used in combat before now.
