Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is supporting Oz’s rival in the Pennsylvania primary.

In a press conference arranged by Oz’s opponent, Dave McCormick, Pompeo accused Oz of having ties to the Turkish government.

Oz holds Turkish citizenship. ABC News first revealed that he voted in Turkey’s 2018 election despite saying he was not involved with the country politically. His campaign spokeswoman denied that casting a vote qualified as “political involvement”.

“We criticize American candidates all the time because they didn’t vote,” Pompeo said. “This is different from that. Not only did he not engage in the American [process] but he engaged in the Turkish political process. That raises in my mind a lot of judgments about his priority.”

Oz claims he maintains his Turkish citizenship to care for his mother, who has Alzheimer’s and lives there. He said he would renounce his Turkish citizenship if he is elected.

Pompeo, who has remarked that the Trump administration was “pretty competent” compared to the current Biden administration, has caused speculation that he may be considering a presidential run in 2024.

This opposition to Trump’s endorsed candidate will surely fuel that fire.
