Tensions are earth are now threatening to shatter a decades old partnership between the US and Russia in space.

The Details: Russia’s decision to publicly test one of its powerful anti-satellite missiles last month, a test which sent thousands of pieces of debris careening dangerously through space, has put new strain on the relationship between the US and Russia. With many observers seeing the move as an act of aggression.

Officials from Russia’s Space Agency and NASA are both attempting to secure a pair of deals which would continue cooperation between the two countries on space missions, especially work on the international space station, going forward. However the agreements first must get past officials in the US State Department.

Regardless of the outcome, the longtime US-Russia arraignment in space may be coming to a natural end anyway, with NASA now looking more toward private sector actors, like Elon Musk’s Space X, for assistance with its upcoming endeavors.
