On Monday, New York attorney general Letitia James issued subpoenas to former President Trump’s children Ivanka and Donald Jr.

Background: New York has been investigating Donald Trump’s real estate business since 2019, specifically if it manipulated the value of assets for tax purposes.

Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, triggered the investigation when he turned over Trump’s financial records to Congress.

Cohen testified that his former boss “inflated his total assets when it served his purposes” and “deflated his assets to reduce his real estate taxes.”

What Happened: Attorney general James issued subpoenas to the two Trump children after their father sued James last month in an attempt to block the probe.

In his lawsuit, Trump claimed James was investigating him for political purposes.

James announced she was running to become New York’s next governor but ultimately suspended her campaign to instead run for another term as attorney general.

What Republicans Say: Many have criticized the investigation into Trump’s taxes as a continuation of the witch hunt against him.
