Two newly released studies are now shedding light on just how worried Americans should be about the new Omicron variant of Covid-19.

The Details: The two studies, out of Scotland and South Africa respectively, now indicate that those infected with the new omicron variant of Covid are at a significantly lower risk of hospitalization than those infected with previous variants.

The study out of Edinburgh in Scotland found that those infected with Omicron were two-thirds less likely to be hospitalized, while the study out of South Africa found that those infected were 70 to 80 percent less likely to require hospitalization.

However, scientists note that the decreased severity may be outweighed by the new variant’s much higher transmissibility.

Why it Matters: The news comes as the US and much of the developed world continue to be swept with the omicron variant of the coronavirus, leading many more liberal leaning municipalities to impose limits on commerce and public gatherings.
