Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has sparked controversy after defending the man arrested in connection with a high-profile investigation into leaked classified documents. In a tweet, she praised the alleged actions of Massachusetts Air National Guardsman Jack Teixeira, who was arrested by the FBI, and implied that President Joe Biden was “the real enemy”. Greene’s comments diverged from those of the majority of Republicans, who praised law enforcement and called for accountability over the leak.

She wrote on Twitter, “Jake Teixeira is white, male, christian, and antiwar. That makes him an enemy to the Biden regime. And he told the truth about troops being on the ground in Ukraine and a lot more. Ask yourself who is the real enemy?”

The leak exposed US intelligence about Russian efforts in Ukraine and spying on American allies, and federal authorities are continuing to investigate. However, Greene’s defense of Teixeira drew criticism from Democrats, with Rep. Eric Swalwell accusing her of siding with one of the country’s “biggest traitors”. David Axelrod, the chief strategist of Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns, also called Greene’s tweet “truly nuts”.

Swalwell tweeted, “McCarthy’s top lieutenant is siding with one of the biggest traitors America has seen. I’m sorry, Marge, being white, male, and Christian is not license to betray your country and put the lives of thousands at risk. But this wouldn’t be the first time she sided with traitors.”

Greene has a history of making inflammatory posts on Twitter and this latest edition will come to no surprise for most politicians.
