Governor Brian Kemp (R-GA) signed the bill on Wednesday.
The law allows the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to look into accusations of voter fraud and issue subpoenas related to investigations. Previously, that power was only held by the secretary of state.
Kemp said in a statement, “This new law will allow us to engage highly-qualified personnel from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to assist in ensuring our elections are secure and fair.”
The bill also included $500,000 to hire election investigators.
The spokeswoman for Georgia’s chapter of Common Cause, Aunna Dennis, criticized the new law an unnecessary.
“If the Bureau is now entrusted with investigating anything that could create doubt about our elections — we suggest they start, first, by investigating those who have been profiting by creating such doubt.”
