The bill includes protections for the Justices as well as their families.
The measure, deemed the Supreme Court Police Parity Act, passed the Senate unanimously. It now heads to the House for another vote.
It would provide security for Justices and their families similar to those for certain executive and legislative branch officials, according to NBC News.
“We must act to ensure Justices and their families are protected from those who wish to cause them harm by extending Supreme Court police security to family members,” Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) said in a statement before the vote.
He and Senator Chris Coons (D-DE) introduced the legislation last week after the abortion opinion draft was leaked by Politico.
Over the weekend, pro-abortion demonstrations turned violent and intrusive. Catholic churches are being targeted as well as the private homes of conservative Justices.
Multiple groups have plans to protest in front on the Justices homes this week. The largest is set to take place Wednesday, May 11th. There is also a large march planned in DC for May 14th.
