On Wednesday, Republican senators advanced a measure to block Biden’s student loan giveaway with a 51-46 vote. Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Jon Tester of Montana, and independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona joined Republicans in yesterdays’ vote and the final a definitive vote will be on Thursday. The act would repeal Biden’s debt relief program and stop the pause the administration has placed on student loan payments. The final vote is expected to take place at noon on Thursday.
Senator Daines co-sponsored the resolution in the Senate, and had this to say about Biden’s giveaway:
“President Biden’s student loan plan is unconstitutional and irresponsible—it needs to be stopped. The President’s claim that he has the authority to cancel $400 billion in debt is a complete disregard for the separation of powers laid out in the Constitution and it is anything but ‘forgiveness.’ It drives up inflation and puts everyday working Montanans on the hook for loans they didn’t take out, not to mention it’s a slap in the face to folks who worked hard to repay their loans on time. This is a radical plan to transfer the debt of high-income earners to working-class Montanans. President Biden needs to reverse this abuse of power,”
Biden has previously stated that he would veto any resolution of the sort and responded to the Republican resolution in a statement.
“This resolution is an unprecedented attempt to undercut our historic economic recovery and would deprive more than 40 million hard-working Americans of much-needed student debt relief,”
The student loan handout has been largely unpopular with Americans and is seen as as excessive spending. Large spending programs like this are exactly what the U.S, government needs to cut in order to lower their debt.
