Thursday, February 9th the House of Representatives passed a bill that seeks to overturn a D.C. bill passed back in October. The House Joint Resolution 24 or the “Disapproving the action of the District of Columbia Council in approving the Local Resident Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2022.” Though a few Republican representatives have come out in outrage over the issue as 162 Democrat House members voted in approval of the D.C. bill.

Representative Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, has called the Democrats in support of the bill “ridiculous,” adding that “only Americans should vote in American elections.” While some criticized the Senator, arguing that anyone legally living in the area should be able to vote, the truth is this bill would allow illegal aliens the right to vote for President.
When the House voted to disapprove the Districts bill, which hasn’t been done since 2015, four Republicans and eight Democrats did not vote. The resolution was adjusted in order to reduce criminal penalties and revoted which earned a 260-162 in favor of overturning sending the bill to the Senate. The 162 who voted to keep the D.C. bill were all Democrats.
The bill was first introduced to the House by Representative James Comer, R-Kentucky, the Chair of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee on January 31st, though Thursday House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minnesota, vowed Republicans would overturn the bill.

Due to the District of Columbia Home Rule Act of 1973, D.C. residents have a say in electing their mayor and city council while also giving Congress the right to overturn any bill passed by that council. Congress has between 30 and 60 days to overturn various legislation passed by the council. So we will now see what happens in the coming days.
