Following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and while his wife is embroiled in controversy related to January 6th, over 800,000 people have signed a petition calling for the justice’s impeachment.

The petition was created by the liberal advocacy group MoveOn. It has just over 813,000 signatures as of Friday night.

It criticized Thomas’ concurring opinion in which he suggested the reasoning used by the court to overturn Roe could also be applied to other landmark cases, such as those that established the right to contraceptive access and same-sex marriage.

It also cited his refusal to recuse himself from cases relating to January 6th in light of reports that his wife, Ginni Thomas, had contacted lawmakers and Trump administration officials encouraging them to reject the 2020 election results.

“He has shown he cannot be an impartial justice and is more concerned with covering up his wife’s coup attempts than the health of the Supreme Court. He must resign—or Congress must immediately investigate and impeach,” the petition reads in part.

Some Democrat lawmakers have called for Thomas’ impeachment as well as the impeachment of other recent Supreme Court justices who were involved in the Roe decision.

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” last month, “If we allow Supreme Court nominees to lie under oath and secure lifetime appointments to the highest court of the land and then issue — without basis, if you read these opinions — rulings that deeply undermine the human civil rights of the majority of Americans, we must see that through.”
