Congressional Democrats are preparing to go against the White House by repealing the coronavirus vaccine mandate for U.S. troops. The National Defense Authorization Act which is set to released on Wednesday will include language that repeals COVID-19 vaccine requirements for service members. The bill will be voted on later this week but it will not include a requirement to reinstate all service members who were discharged for refusing to be immunized.
But the act will spell out that the Pentagon should study how to compensate those punished for refusing to vaccinated. The decision by lawmakers comes one day after the White House reasserted its support for keeping the vaccine mandate in place.
White House National Security Council coordinator John Kirby had said, “Secretary Austin’s been very clear that he opposes the repeal of that vaccine mandate, and the president actually concurs with the secretary that we need to continue to believe that all Americans, including those in the armed forces, should be vaccinated and boosted for COVID 19.”
