House minority leader Kevin McCarthy held a press conference on the southern border in El Paso, Texas Tuesday afternoon. The stop was part of a tour of the border by McCarthy who met with border agents to discuss the severity of the border crisis. His assessment of the crisis must have been dire because McCarthy called for Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to resign or prepare to face impeachment.

McCarthy said:

“His actions have produced the great wave of illegal immigration in recorded history. This is why today I am calling on the secretary to resign.”

“He cannot and must not remain in that position. If Secretary Mayorkas does not resign, House Republicans will investigate every order, every action and every failure to determine whether we can begin an impeachment inquiry.”

Mayorkas has repeatedly claimed the border is “secure” and “closed.” Data does not support this claim however, as the number of illegal border crossings has skyrocketed since the rolling back of of Trump border policies.
