Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif, has been removed from his leadership role as House Speaker. This unprecedented event marked the first time a Speaker has been expelled through a House vote. The vote concluded with 216 in favor and 210 against McCarthy’s removal, with 8 MAGA Republicans voting along side all House Democrats

Gaetz Lead Mutiny

Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., initiated a motion against McCarthy on Monday stating that McCarthy failed the American people by averting a government shutdown last week. Gaetz also accused McCarthy of not honoring commitments made to secure his Speaker position. Tensions escalated with Gaetz stating, “Chaos is Speaker McCarthy. Chaos is somebody who we cannot trust with their word.”

Democrats and GOP Division

The ousting vote saw eight Republicans and all present Democrats united against McCarthy. Democrats were reluctant to support McCarthy, seeking to paint the Republican side as choatic and fractured. Before the vote, McCarthy told the press that the Republican voting to oust him were “turning over the floor to the Democrats.”
