The move comes after days of pleas by Ukrainian President Volodmyr Zelenskyy to Western officials to cut off imports.

A person familiar with the matter told the Associated Press that Biden would announce the ban as soon as Tuesday. The White House stated Biden would announce “actions to continue to hold Russia accountable for its unprovoked and unjustified war on Ukraine.”

Biden, and other leaders of the West, have been hesitant to impose energy sanctions in the face of already rising costs and inflation. The US will act alone in enforcing the ban, but in consultation with European allies who are much more dependent on Russian supplies.

The US typically imports about 100,000 barrels a day from Russia, around 5% of their crude oil exports.
