FormerĀ Trump White House official SteveĀ Bannon has beenĀ sentenced to four months in prisonĀ and a $6,500 fine for contempt of Congress. Bannon was found guilty after defying a subpoena from the Jan. 6 Committee. His sentence will not be imposed until all appeals are resolved and therefore it is possible he will not serve any time.
The Justice Department hadĀ recommended a six-month prison sentenceĀ and a $200,000 fine for former Trump aide Steve BannonĀ due to his failure to comply with a subpoena to appear before the House Select Committee investigating January 6. Bannon addressed media after the sentencing:
āRemember this illegitimate regime, their judgment day is on eight November when the Biden administration ends. I want to thank you all for coming.ā
The DOJ pushed for Bannon to receive at leastĀ six monthsĀ in prison, citing his ābad faithā behavior in and out of court:
āFrom the moment that the Defendant, Stephen K. Bannon, accepted service of a subpoena from the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol, he has pursued a bad-faith strategy of defiance and contempt,ā
āThe Committee sought documents and testimony from the Defendant relevant to a matter of national importance: the circumstances that led to a violent attack on the Capitol and disruption of the peaceful transfer of power. In response, the Defendant flouted the Committeeās authority and ignored the subpoenaās demands.ā
