New York City mayor Bill de Blasio appears to be making moves towards announcing a new campaign for governor of New York.

What Happened: Bill De Blasio, who can’t run for another term as NYC mayor, has filed paperwork with the state’s Board of Elections to request approval for a fundraising committee that could be used for his 2022 campaign.

Why Does it Matter?: Bill de Blasio is a lifelong, hardcore Democrat known for implementing progressive policies that have ravaged a once-great U.S. city. If elected to governor de Blasio will have the power to push those progressive policies on the entire state of New York which could have major implications on future elections and policies.

Context: Democrat Gov. Andrew Cuomo was recently booted from the governor’s mansion after multiple women came forward with allegations of sexual harassment. A report by the New York Attorney General Letitia James confirmed the women’s allegations as true and Cuomo later stepped down. Now, Democrat Kathy Hochul is the Governor of New York

What’s Next: If Bill de Blasio does officially run for governor of New York he is already facing a stiff primary field. Last week, NY Attorney General Letitia James announced she is launching a primary challenge against incumbent Gov. Kathy Hochul.

Other Candidates: Despite New York being a longtime Democrat stronghold, the 2022 gubernatorial race has already attracted some Republicans willing to fight for the Empire State. Former NYC mayor and Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani’s son, Andrew is running to become the state’s next governor.

Other Republican candidates running for NY governor include Congressman Lee Zeldin, the Rep. from Long Island.

Former Westchester county executive Robert Astorino is also running to become New York’s next governor. The Republican candidate first got his start in talk radio and television and in his campaign emphasizes his support for police and education.
