Pennsylvania Senate Nominee Mehmet Oz (R) said Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney (D) should resign after he said he was looking forward to his term being over so he didn’t have to deal with gun violence any longer.
Following a July 4th shooting in the city that injured two police officers, Kenney made the out of touch comments during a press briefing.
“I’m waiting for something bad to happen all the time,” he said. “I’ll be happy when I’m not mayor and I can enjoy some stuff.”
He was forced to issue another press release the following day addressing his comments.
“In a late-night, overwhelming moment of frustration, I said I was looking forward to no longer being mayor,” Kenney said. “Let me be clear, I’m incredibly grateful to be mayor of this great city and for the people who elected me to lead.”
Oz said Kenney’s explanation wasn’t enough.
“Mayor Kenney should resign from office,” Oz said in a statement issued directly to the media. “Kenney’s comments about how he will be happy when he is no longer mayor is further indication he has given up on Philadelphia.”
Oz decried Kenney’s “radical far-left policies” on criminal justice reform that Oz argues are causing homicide rates to increase.
“We need to restore safety and security to Philadelphia and all of Pennsylvania – it begins by getting rid of Kenney, Krasner and Fetterman,” Oz said.
