Governor Glenn Youngkin (R) appointed former Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) head Andrew Wheeler to his newly created Office of Regulatory Management, fulfilling a campaign promise to reduce regulatory requirements in the state.
The new office with Wheeler at the helm will attempt to reduce regulations in a similar manner to a 2017 Trump policy requiring the repeal of two existing regulations for every new one issued, according to The Hill.
“Last year, I pledged to Virginians that we would remove 25% of the regulatory requirements in the Commonwealth,” Youngkin said in a statement.
“In the spirit of this objective, we have created the Office of Regulatory Management, led by Andrew Wheeler, which will create much needed transparency and efficiency in Virginia’s regulatory process to ensure that we have a government that works for the citizens of the Commonwealth.”
Youngkin had originally nominated Wheeler as Virginia’s secretary of natural resources, but the Democrat-majority state Senate voted him down due to his history with the Trump administration.
His position as head of the new regulatory office does not require General Assembly confirmation.
