Jurassic Park: Dominion star Chris Pratt denied ever going to Hillsong church, or even being a religious person, despite commonly facing internet criticism over his faith.
“I never went to Hillsong. I’ve never actually been to Hillsong. I don’t know anyone from that church,” he told Men’s Health in a recent interview.
Pratt took heat on social media after transgender actor Elliot Page attacked him on Twitter in 2019 for associating with the church, which he called “infamously anti-LGBTQ.”
The Guardian’s of the Galaxy star released a statement that he is a “man who believes that everyone is entitled to love who they want free from the judgment of their fellow man,” at the time, but did not deny attending Hillsong for the sake of their reputation.
“I’m gonna, like, throw a church under the bus?” he remarked. “If it’s like the Westboro Baptist Church, that’s different.”
Pratt denied being “religious,” but attributed the public’s perception of him to a speech he made at the MTV Movie & TV Awards. “God is real. God loves you. God wants the best for you,” he told the crowd while accepting a Generation Award.
He thinks that the faith-based messaging soured some fan’s views of him. “Religion has been oppressive as f–k for a long time,” he commented. “I didn’t know that I would kind of become the face of religion when really I’m not a religious person.”
Pratt believes there is a difference between being religious, which he describes as “adhering to the customs created by man,” and accuses of “appropriating” the awe reserved for God, and “using it to control people.”
“To take money from people, to abuse children, to steal land, to justify hatred. Whatever it is,” he continued. “The evil that’s in the heart of every single man has glommed on to the back of religion and come along for the ride.”
Pratt and his wife Katherine (Schwarzenegger) attend celebrity lauded Zoe Church, and recently baptized their daughter Lyla at a Catholic church in Santa Monica.
