Vice President Kamala Harris solicited an audience with the media to retract a definitive statement she made about President Joe Biden’s intent to run in 2024, setting off a new round of internal speculation about his future.

In a Monday interview with CNN’s Dana Brash, Harris asserted, “Joe Biden is running for reelection, and I will be his ticket mate. Full stop.”

However, on Wednesday aboard Air Force Two, Harris sent an advisor to the back of the plane to prepare reporters to take a less sure statement.

“The president intends to run and if he does, I will be his ticket mate. We will run together,” she told an LA Times reporter.

Her overly deliberate clarification renewed questions about Biden’s intentions. His age and mental capacity to seek another term has been subject to speculation since the 2020 election.

However, the president and White House officials have repeatedly stated that Biden expects to run in 2024.

An anonymous Democrat official told the Time that Harris’ comments were intended to avoid “trigger words” that would legally require Biden to establish a formal campaign and begin fundraising.
