CBS News confirmed the Capitol Police detained a production crew from its “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” after they disobeyed orders to leave and remained in the building unescorted to film elements for the show.
At least seven crew members were arrested in the Longworth House Office Building.
Fox News was the first to report on the arrests. The group intended to conduct interviews during the January 6th House committee hearing but did not have proper press credentials.
They were then invited into the House office buildings to conduct interviews with members of the January 6th committee, including Representatives Adam Schiff (D-CA), Stephanie Murphy (D-FL), and Jake Auchincloss (D-MA).
However, when they were told by Capitol Police that the building was closed to visitors and that they needed to leave, they apparently did not. How they managed to remain inside the building after it was closed is not known at this time.
Around 8:30pm Thursday night, Capitol Police said they responded to a call about a disturbance in the Longworth House building.
“Responding officers observed seven individuals, unescorted and without Congressional ID, in a sixth-floor hallway. The building was closed to visitors, and these individuals were determined to be a part of a group that had been directed by the USCP to leave the building earlier in the day,” Capitol Police said.
A senior source in the House of Representatives told Fox that the group had taken videos and pictures around the offices of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Representative Lauren Boebert (R-CO).
The individuals were charged with illegal entry. The incident remains an “active criminal investigation” that may result in additional charges, per the Capitol Police.
