Republican Mayra Flores prevailed over three others in the race to avoid a runoff and fill former Democratic Representative Filemon Vela’s seat, who resigned from Congress in March to take a job with a private lobbying firm.

The win is especially significant as the Cameron County district is almost entirely Hispanic and voted for Biden by 13% in 2020.

Dave Wasserman first called the race on Twitter.

It’s a surprising win for the 84% Hispanic district.

But Flores will only hold the seat through January. Due to redistricting, she faces changing lines that will shift the district to slightly more Democrat-friendly territory.

However, Hispanic voters are thought to be shifting to the Republican party as Democrats fail to make progress on key voter issues. The midterm election will be a test for the strength of that theory and may hold insight into the 2024 presidential election.
