Representative Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) is no stranger to criticism, but a veteran journalist took it to a new level on Sunday night after the congressman praised the recently released film, “Top Gun: Maverick”.

The tweet was simple, direct, and seemingly harmless enough.

“The new @TopGunMovie was awesome,” Kinzinger wrote.

But Yashar Ali, who regularly contributes to the Huffington Post and New York Magazine, took deep offense to the politician stating this apparently controversial view.

Kinzinger’s response was again simple: “WHAT??”

The journalist continued his tirade against Tom Cruise, saying “Scientology weaponizes tweets like yours against its members”.

Actress Leah Remini, a former Scientologist turned outspoken activist against the organization, also chimed in.

“Instead of investigating Scientology for its abuses, its intimidation of IRS officials, among other things, you’re promoting the project of its second in command. Got it,” she tweeted at him.

“I liked the top gun movie bro. Chill,” Kinzinger replied in conclusion.
