The primary is one of three where former President Trump handpicked primary challengers.

A poll by the University of Georgia’s School of Public and International Affairs on behalf of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution shows current Georgia Governor Brian Kemp with a sizeable 20-point lead over former Georgia Senator David Perdue.

Much of the difference between the two candidates is their take on the 2020 presidential election. Kemp notoriously denied Trump’s request to delay or refuse to certify the state’s election results.

Many of Georgia’s large population of center right voters are still angry that Trump encouraged Georgia conservatives to sit out the 2020 senate run-off election in protest, resulting in both Republican candidates losing and the GOP losing its majority in the senate.

Voters in the state see Kemp as a reliable bet.

“I don’t care who endorses whom,” said Georgia native Jim Southard, who voted for Trump twice. “Kemp has a really good track record. He’s batting a thousand against Stacey Abrams and I want the person running who has already beat Abrams to win the primary.

Aside from Purdue, Trump backed Representative Tedd Budd in North Carolina and attorney Harriet Hageman in Wyoming. The successes or failures of these candidates are likely to guide Trump’s decision to run in 2024.
