A military base in Maryland was forced to go into lockdown after an armed teen and one other suspect bypassed a security checkpoint.

Context: Vice President Kamala Harris along with other top U.S. officials went to Joint Base Andrews following a trip to Selma, AL to attend an event for “Bloody Sunday.”

What Happened: The two intruders infiltrated the base in a stolen vehicle, officials said. Security personnel deployed barriers to stop the vehicle, and the suspects then fled on foot. (per The Wall Street Journal)

According to reports, VP Harris left the base on Marine Two minutes before the active shooter threat prompted the lockdown.

Joint Base Andrew released a statement shortly before midnight on Sunday confirming the lockdown.


“At approximately 9 p.m. today, one vehicle drove through the security checkpoint and failed to adhere to commands of security personnel at the Main Gate on Joint Base Andrews, Maryland,” the statement said. “The 316th Security Forces Group immediately deployed the barriers and stopped the vehicle. Two individuals fled the vehicle, and one was apprehended by 316th SFG. One individual remains at large. We can confirm that the individual who was apprehended had a weapon, but no shots have been fired. There is not an active shooter situation at Joint Base Andrews; however, the intruder’s whereabouts are currently unknown. (per The Washington Examiner)

Who Was Involved: Along with VP Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff other cabinet members were also on Joint Base Andrews at the time of the lockdown.
