Susan Hoffinger will take over as lead prosecutor. She has experience on both sides of criminal law and served as a Manhattan prosecutor under district attorney Robert Morgenthau from 1992-2000. Since then, she has handled private white-collar cases for her family’s law firm. Hoffinger could not be reached for comment.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg inherited the case from his predecessor, Cyrus R. Vance Jr. The case gained notoriety under Vance due to the drawn out legal battle for Trump’s tax returns, which was eventually won at the Supreme Court. Since obtaining the records, prosecutors alleged a 15-year tax fraud scheme headed by the Trump Organization’s chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg.
Trump and his legal team have adamantly denied any wrongdoing and portrayed the investigations as a politically motivated witch hunt. Last week, a state judge overseeing the probe ordered Trump, Donald Trump Jr., and Ivanka Trump to answer questions under oath in depositions. The Trump family lawyer said he will appeal that ruling.
