The United States has retained strong links with Taiwan, even selling it weapons, and promising to protect it.
China is upset at this and says the United States is violating promises it made and this will put Taiwan in a dangerous situation and will cause the US to pay an “unbearable price.”
Why this is important: Tensions have grown in recent years and seem to be reaching a flashpoint especially after President Biden invited Taiwan to his democracy summit earlier this month.
However, it is unknown what the US reaction would be should China try to take the island by force. US officials have stated that a move like this by China is unacceptable.
